It is important to understand why we do what we do.
Coolamon Community does not research the women who receive the Coolamon gift. It is important that we focus on our strengths. We do not set any criteria on which women can receive the gift of the Coolamon and allow the trusted Aboriginal Healthcare Professionals to decide if a woman would benefit from the Coolamon gift.
Benefit means different things to different women. For some of our Aboriginal Healthcare Service partners, this is every new mother they see, and for others it is some of the new mothers they see. We facilitate whatever is appropriate for each individual Aboriginal Healthcare Service, respectively.
Wonderful organisations like SNAICC conduct relevant and in-depth research which can be found in full in their annual Family Matters Report.
This research illustrates why supporting culturally safe healthcare is vital to the positive health and wellbeing outcomes for mum and bub.
